Long ago, there were three little girls named Artianna, Naomi, and Julia. Artianna, the eldest, was a very kind young lady who always looked out for her siblings. The middle child, Julia, was the smartest of the trio. And there was the youngest sister, the impish Naomi. Unknown to the sister, they were reincarnated Goddess for Lumin, their homeland. Lumin was a place forgotten to the world with no electricity, concrete, or anything else from our modern world. So the three Goddesses lived quietly together until a man arrived one day. The man had short light blue hair and strange clothes the children had never seen. His pants were made of soft fabric but not silk. His shirt had multiple buttons running from the bottom to his neck, but he always left the top button undone, and his sleeves rolled up. Unaware of the young deities was that this man was a demon, but he claimed to be their friend.
The demon appeared before them with gifts they had never seen. Entrecote toys that would light up, make noise, and perform amazing tricks. But the most impressive was the magic game box he brought with him. This box was made of materials they had never seen before, except for the glass cover on the front. And attached to this box was a small box with two special wands attached and an opening for small tablets. When not playing games, the demon would teach the sisters various skills. He taught Artianna how to use a sword, Julia was learning magic, and Naomi was mentored in "reading" people.
One day, the children made a new friend, another young girl with long full green hair. They invited the young girl to their home, but only the demon was there to greet her. The demon sensed something dangerous within the green-haired child, so he decided to do something about it. When the deities came home, they arrived at a horrific scene of their new friend lying face down on the floor and the demon's hands covered in her blood. The girls were shaken and terrified, unable to process what they had just witnessed. The devil only had one option and did not like it. He wiped the memories of the Goddesses so they would never remember him or the young girl before taking everything he had given them away. Now the demon watches the trio from afar, still ensuring the Goddesses stay safe.
Present-day Lumin
The Woeful Jester was a tavern several miles from a small town called Huen. It was a quiet place, the lack of business so apparent that many wondered how its patron stayed in business. Within the establishment sat a man with a book and a drink on the table. The light he used to read was provided by a crystal hovering several inches from the table, giving off a gentle illumination. His ear twitched, hearing footsteps approaching the tavern's entrance. He had suspicions about who might soon be arriving and set his book on the table, anticipating his guests with an almost child-like sense of excitement. The doors to the Woeful Jester swung open, revealing three young women aged between teen and young adult.
The first girl he noticed was the auburn-haired lady wearing round-framed glasses over her deep blue eyes. She donned a white long-sleeved shirt with blue trimming down the sides, middle, and cuffs. Her dark blue skirt matched the blue on her shirt and was accompanied by thigh-high leather boots. The young lady was also draped with a cloak fashioned by a gold pendant matching the gold hair piece and a leather belt around her waist. To the left of the cloaked young woman was her elder sister, who had short white hair and shining green eyes. The white-haired girl wore white armor accompanied by white trimmings and black sleeves save her shoulders and forearms, which were protected by the armor. She, too, wore thigh-high boots, except hers were iron. Finally, a long sword with a beautiful matching white hilt and handle rested on her right hip.
The third girl also had short hair, similar to the knight but brown like her cloaked companion. She wore a short white shirt with a violet vest and a blue scarf gently wrapped around her neck. She wore blue shorts with fur trim and a brown belt equipped with a small brown pouch. The young lady also donned leather thigh-high boots with matching fingerless gloves and blue socks, which were visible just above the top of her shoes. But what was most noticeable were her eyes. The young woman had one right green eye, and the other was amber. The three women stood at the door, staring at the man who had been stalking them for seemingly years.
The knight was the first to approach the young man as if testing to see if there was any imminent danger. The cloaked young woman followed close behind alongside the third party member. The man only smiled warmly as if he were about to greet old friends. The trio sensed this and became slightly uneasy because he was a stranger to them.
"Good evening Artianna." The man said in a friendly tone. The knight stopped in her tracks upon hearing this man utter her name. The others raised an eyebrow, becoming more suspicious of The Woeful Jester's owner. He chuckled to himself before standing to face the young ladies. As he did so, each one took a defensive posture. The knight and the girl with heterochromia had a hand on their sword and pouch, respectively, while the cloaked woman raised an open palm facing him.
The man saw the palm aimed at him and put his hands in the air, showing he meant no harm. However, this did not persuade the ladies to lower their guard; instead of putting them more on edge. The knight kept her eyes on the man, waiting for sudden movement before speaking up, "How did you know my name?"
"Who doesn't know about the Kismet sisters?" He boasted. Artianna turned to her younger siblings, still as perplexed as she was. Finally, the cloaked Kismet walked up to the man, placing her hand behind her back before producing a tiny clear crystal roughly three inches in length. The man watched while she held it close, and the crystal began to shine a dark violet. Upon seeing this, the young Kismet calmly took a step back while Artianna drew her sword.
"A better question is why a demon is interested in us?" The cloaked woman asked as the knight pointed her sword at him. The man gently put the finger on the blade and lowered it, trying to keep the peace in his establishment.
"No need for violence. I don't feel like having to clean this place afterward. And to answer your question, Julia, I'm a friend, believe it or not." The demon explained. Artianna stood there, a blank bewildered expression plastered on her face. At the same time, Julia adjusted her glasses, staring hard at the demon.
"And you are…?" The young mage continued. The demon thought for a moment, knowing it could have undesired consequences if he provided the wrong information. The two remaining sisters stood there, impatiently waiting for an answer.
"Not important. What matters is your identity. You three are the reincarnated Trinity." He explained. This declaration caused Artianna to drop her sword in shock. At the same time, Julia raised an eyebrow, unconvinced by such a bold statement. The Trinity consisted of Soul, Echo, and Solitude, three goddesses who were said to have protected Lumin until something happened to cause them to fall into a deep slumber.
"You really expect us to believe that we are reincarnated deities? Art eats like a pygmy boar, and Nao dodges responsibility like it was a magical ailment." Julia proclaimed. Upon hearing this insult, Artianna's attention was directed to her sister's rude comment. She placed a hand on Julia's shoulder, turning the young mage around to face her.
"Oh, that's funny coming from miss, 'I'm the prettiest mage in all the land.' You're the only spell caster who puts as much effort in their looks rather than a ritual." The knight snapped. Julia folded her arms and furrowed her brow, taking exception to the shot at her pride.
"I'm smart and beautiful, Art. A woman can excel in more than one thing. You know, with the right accessories…." The young mage stated. Before she could finish her statement, Artianna pouted in a huff and defensively turned her nose to her somewhat judgmental sister.
"Sweet Solitude…Not everyone is as vain as you are, Jules!" Art yelled in protest. Julia glared at her elder sister, ready to fully engage in this argument, before seeing The Demon from the corner of her sight. The young mage then remembered why they had arrived at this empty tavern.
"We're getting off-topic here, Art. Perhaps it was one of his tricks." Julia theorized while her and Artianna's collective gazes once again focused on The Demon, amused by the petty bickering. His smile faded when he realized the fun was over.
"No trick and I am telling the truth. The three of you are Goddesses. Artianna, Julia and…" His voice began to trail off as he looked around. He never noticed it because of the arguing, but Naomi had been gone for some time. This question baffled the demon. With his heightened senses, there was no way she could have slipped by him undetected. What was more interesting was that her sisters didn't notice Naomi's absence.
"Where is your sister?" He asked, recalling her more mischievous nature. When asked this, both Kismets looked confused before scanning the area for the youngest sibling. But instead, they saw wooden floors with rows of tables clad in white clothes sitting in front of the stage. On the left was the bar with a door on each side.
"Looking for me?" Naomi said, seemingly out of nowhere. Everyone turned to where the voice was coming from, finding Nao sitting on a table behind the demon they were investigating. The devil turned in surprise; only one person could sneak up behind him, and that was only due to the fact they were both murmurs, otherwise known as sound demons. Naomi noticed the genuine shock on the demon's face, which caused her to give a smug grin.
"I found some interesting stuff in that room over there." Naomi started, pointing to the door on the far left corner of the tavern. Once it dawned on the demon that his personal space had been violated, he began to growl at the young thief.
"Did you break into my room?" He snarled baring his fangs. Naomi said nothing, only producing what seemed to be a tiny black tablet from her pouch. It had a strange colorful illustration of a cartoonish man holding a shield and sword while fighting a monster on its front. The top read, "Dragon Blade Adventures." The bottom of this strange small box-like item had an opening with a hard slab placed perfectly in the middle. Naomi could only assume teeth were carved into it in a perfectly symmetrical row.
"DID YOU REALLY STEAL MY GAMES?" The demon howled. Naomi looked at her unusual bounty, wondering how something so strange looking could be considered a game. She had already opened one up to find the smaller tablet inside of it but couldn't understand why it was green or had so many gold-like lines. Perhaps they were some sort of maze or puzzle for children. But the thief also knew that other devices could use these weird objects.
"So, do I need that large box and the smaller one connected to it? I pressed this button that said power on the small one, and the big one produced a weird light. Whatever, I'll give this magical game box my full attention when we get home." Naomi continued. The demon was enraged at this point. From what it sounded like, the thief had taken not only his games but also his TV and game console!
“But how?” That was the only question he was able to muster in his anger.
"I carried each individual part back home. It only took three trips." Naomi boasted. This admittance of her crimes only raised further questions in the murmur, who went from angry to confused and slightly impressed. Artianna and Julia could only watch as their younger sister outdid this demon in his own game of subterfuge.
"You live almost a mile away. That would have taken at least two hours. You three have only been here for at most ten minutes, and I don't see so much as a bead of sweat on your forehead." The demon stated. Julia nodded her head in agreement. If what Nao was saying was true, she would be unable to slip past and make multiple trips home without anyone noticing.
"Maybe this guy is on to something about us being The Trinity. That would explain why I'm so amazing at my job and almost anything else I do." The youngest Kismet boasted. The demon and the other Kismets all groaned at this unabashed ego stroke. Artianna finally put her sword away, feeling this demon was less of a threat since Naomi could make a fool of him so easily.
"Sorry, Nao, still not buying it." The knight said. Naomi shrugged and hopped off the table, walking passed The Demon to reunite with her sister in this impromptu interrogation.
"Maybe, but our stalker isn't going to be upfront with us, so that's why I decided to raid his room," Nao stated. Julia nodded in agreement upon hearing this. Naomi was right. The demon could be claiming secrecy to protect them or himself from being exposed. The surest way to find out would be through evidence rather than questioning. The devil didn't seem like an issue yet, but that didn't change what he was.
"Then I suppose our business is done here," Jules stated before she and her sisters turned to make their exit. The Host watched as they walked. Julia stopped while her sisters left, turning to face him one last time.
"Unless there was something else you wanted to tell us?" She asked, giving him a chance to come forward with his intentions. The demon pondered this and thought of something he could share that might help without exposing too much of what he knew. He smiled warmly at the young mage, whose face slightly soured.
"You were once known as Solitude, and we were best friends." The murmur said in a kind tone. Julia rolled her eyes and groaned before walking away. Claiming the mage was the Goddess of Magic was so cliché that it made his story seem less convincing. However, you wouldn't easily forget having a demon as a friend. She left, unsatisfied with his answer, and went to rejoin her sisters to dig for the truth. Thank you so much for reading the first chapter!
